How to Rent a Car in Martinique
Renting a car in Martinique is straightforward, as long as you know what will be asked of you and what is included. Here, in the order the questions come up: do you really need a car, what the conditions are, how the deposit works, what is included, and where to collect the vehicle. As a reminder, Spar'Car is a local car rental company based on the island, not a platform.
Do you really need to rent a car in Martinique?
In the vast majority of cases, yes. The island is around seventy kilometres from north to south, but the terrain and winding roads stretch journey times, and the most rewarding places — the southern beaches, the distilleries, Mount Pelée, the Route de la Trace — are spread out and poorly served away from the main roads.
Without a vehicle you stay within a short radius of your accommodation and depend on timetables you do not control. With a car, you leave early, stop where you like, and actually see the island.
What are the requirements?
They are simple, and the same whatever the rental length:
- Be at least 21 years old. We do not rent below that age.
- Have held your licence for more than a year.
- Present three original documents: a driving licence held for at least 12 months, a valid ID document, and a credit card in the name of the main driver. Copies are not accepted.
A young driver surcharge applies; it is shown at the time of booking.
The deposit: the question people worry about most
It comes up more than any other, and it is where practices differ most between companies. With us, you choose between two options:
- A card pre-authorisation — the classic route, with nothing taken as long as the vehicle comes back in good condition.
- A deposit through Swikly, subject to a service fee — it does not tie up your card limit.
In both cases, nothing is charged if the vehicle is returned in good condition. The choice is yours — useful when several of you travel on one card, or when you would rather keep your limit free for the rest of the trip.
What is included?
Our rentals are built to avoid surprises at the counter. Included:
- Unlimited mileage — drive around the island as often as you like.
- A local team available 7 days a week — in case of breakdown or immobilisation.
The car is insured, with an excess in the event of damage. If you would rather drive with complete peace of mind, you can reduce that excess when you book.
Optional, and clearly shown when you book: the excess reduction, an additional driver, a child seat, or handover at the port of Fort-de-France. Fuel is at your own expense, as everywhere.

Where do you collect the car?
The simplest option is collection at Aimé Césaire airport: the car is waiting when you land, handover there is free, and you drive straight to your accommodation.
Second pick-up point: the port of Fort-de-France, with a supplement — handy if you arrive by boat or are staying in the capital. You choose your pick-up point when you book.
From either one you drive straight to where you are staying, whether that is Fort-de-France, Les Trois-Îlets or the south.
Which vehicle should you choose?
A city car is enough for two and parks anywhere, which matters at the busier beaches. Travelling as a group with luggage, a roomier model saves you being cramped. Our fleet covers both.
For a stay of several months, a relocation or an assignment, long-term rental works out cheaper and is simpler to manage than a string of short rentals.
When should you book?
As early as you can if you are coming between December and April, or in July and August: those are our two busiest periods, and the most popular models go first. The rest of the year, booking ahead is still the only way to get the vehicle you want on the day you want it.

Why go through a local company
We are based in Martinique. In practice that means someone who knows the roads you are describing, who can step in if something goes wrong, and whom you speak to directly rather than through a call centre. On an island, that matters more than it sounds.
