On the Atlantic coast, Le Robert and Le François share sheltered bays, islets and the 'fonds blancs', sandbanks where you can stand in the middle of the sea. They are also among the seaside towns closest to the airport: your car waits for you at Aimé Césaire airport, the handover is free, and you reach the town in 20 to 25 minutes. From the airport to Le Robert and Le François
Le François is about 15 km away (20 to 25 minutes outside rush hours to the town centre), Le Robert under 20 km (about 25 minutes). On weekdays traffic builds towards Le Lamentin in the morning and in the other direction in the late afternoon: allow a margin on the day of your flight.
What a car opens up on the Atlantic coast
- The white sandbanks and Joséphine's Bathtub — off Le François, between the Thierry and Oscar islets. You get there by boat with local trip operators; the car takes you to the departure point. Legend has it that Empress Joséphine used to bathe there;
- The Le Robert islets — around ten protected islets in the bay. Some are private, such as Îlet Chancel, home to a rare iguana: you see them from a boat;
- Habitation Clément — in Le François, an estate listed as a historic monument and home to the Fondation Clément art centre;
- The Caravelle peninsula — further north, in La Trinité, for its trails and beaches.
