A sub-prefecture on the Atlantic coast, La Trinité guards the entrance to the Caravelle peninsula: the village of Tartane, its beaches, the nature reserve and the ruins of Château Dubuc.
From the airport to La Trinité and Tartane
About twenty kilometres to the village: 25 to 35 minutes outside rush hours from the terminal. Tartane, at the end of the peninsula, takes 35 to 45 minutes, and Château Dubuc about ten minutes more, on a narrow road. Good news: vehicles are allowed as far as the château's car park.
The Caravelle peninsula
- The nature reserve — created in 1976, 387 hectares managed by the regional nature park, with two waymarked trails: the short one (1 h 30) and the long one (3 h 20);
- The ruins of Château Dubuc — open daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm, admission charged, audio guide included;
- The Caravelle lighthouse — the trail leads to its foot; the tower itself cannot be visited;
- Tartane beach — the village's calm, shallow water, with the fishing boats;
- Anse l'Étang — known for its waves shaped by the shallows, the surfers' meeting point.
In the 2025 health checks, Anse Cosmy, Anse l'Étang and L'Autre Bord are rated excellent, and Tartane village beach sufficient. That rating covers the water's bacteriology, not the state of the sea: Like most beaches in Martinique, they have no permanent lifeguard: swim with care and follow the signs. The Atlantic side can also be affected by sargassum: check Météo-France's forecast before you go (see best time to visit Martinique).
Roads and vehicle
The peninsula road is narrow and winding: nothing that calls for a special vehicle, just calm driving. A small car parks better in Tartane; as a family, see our 7-seaters. The Caravelle is one of the stops on our 2-week itinerary, and the Atlantic coast continues towards Le Robert and Le François.
